10 Minute Pre-Trip Checkup Can Pay Off

A properly maintained vehicle is safer and more dependable and will even save a few dollars at the gas pumps. Motorists should plan ahead to allow time to perform necessary maintenance themselves or at the local service facility.

Car Care Council offers three suggestions for a traveler's 10-minute pre- trip checklist:

  • Check all fluids - There are several fluids that require attention: Engine Oil, power steering, brake and transmission fluids, and windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
  • Check all hoses and belts - A belt failure can affect the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering, and the cooling system. Cooling system hoses may be deteriorating from within, so old hoses and clamps in marginal condition might need to be replaced.
  • Check the tires - Check tire inflation and inspect the tread for uneven wear, indicating the need for wheel alignment. Also look for bulges and bald spots.

Follow these tips to maximize fuel efficiency of your vehicle:

  • Vehicle gas caps - about 17% of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or missing altogether, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year.
  • Under inflated tires - when tires aren't inflated properly it's like driving with a parking brake on. It can cost a mile or two per gallon.
  • Worn spark plugs - A vehicle can have either four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles, resulting in electrical and chemical erosion from heat.
  • Dirty air filters - A clogged air filter creates a "rich" mixture - the proportion of gas to air is incorrect. This wastes fuel and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10%.
  • Don't drive aggresively - Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33% on the highway and 5% on city streets.
  • Avoid excessive idling - sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient.
  • Drive the speed limit - Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mile driven over 60 results in an additional 10 cents per gallon. Increase fuel efficiency by using cruise control.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Andrew was very professional and honest and he only did the work that needed to be done he would call me first before he would do anything on my car he saved me a considerable amount of money compared to the other place I was taking my 2 cars. So nice to find a Automotive Business That you can actually trust and not get ripped off. I really didn't think there was a place like this anywhere! A friend recommended it to me.

-Paula V.

Best mechanic in town I've been going to him for last 7 years. He is not like other mechanics just trying to run up your bill. He will advise you what's best for you and your vehicle. Honest stand up dude and very knowledgeable, I will continue to bring him business and anyone else I know.

-Phillip R.

This shop is family run, they do great work, and most importantly, they're honest! My wife and I have brought both our cars to the shop recently and our experiences exceeded our expectations. I appreciate Andrews clear communication, giving his recommendations based off of their initial diagnostics. He also didn't pressure us at all, and explained what work was most critical, based off of our financial situation. Even better, they're located only a couple blocks away from us. We'll definitely be back, but hopefully not too soon(for our vehicles sake) lol.

These guys are great. Finally found a trusted shop! I have an older car and don't want to take it to the dealership and overpay. I was happy with their service and definitely will be returning.

-Joshua M.

I've taken my last 4 cars here, foreign & domestic. My mom's 2 cars go here only. Honest, swift and no-regret repairs.

-E. Robinson

Great honest service plus they guarantee their jobs thanks to the team.

-Nestor R.

I have been going here for years. My Dad originally started going to Hector's (that's what I call the place) back in the day and my whole family goes here. This place is the family's mechanic for all our cars. I have always gotten great service, reasonable pricing, and all around knowledge mechanics there no matter what car you drive. I believe this place is fair and doesn't tell you that you will need something done on your car that you actually don't need at that time. Tell everyone about this place you will not be disappointed with the service and the quality of work.

-Melissa

...I will continually take all my vehicles here from now on.
